Pair of Japanese Swords with Matching Koshirae Including Katana and Late Muromachi-Period Wakizashi Available at Hindman Auction House

Hindman Auction House is currently hosting an exciting auction for a pair of Japanese swords with matching koshirae. The set includes a katana and a late Muromachi-period wakizashi, both attributed to "Katsumitsu." With a current bid of $1,100 and 7 bids counted so far, this item has garnered significant interest from collectors.

The katana boasts a 25.75" curved shinogi-zukuri blade with an unsigned two-hole nakago. It features itame hada, sugu hamon, chu kissaki, and ihori mune. However, the koshirae does not fit correctly as the nakago appears slightly too wide for tsuka, making removal challenging.

On the other hand, the wakizashi showcases a slightly curved shinogi-zukuri blade measuring 17.25" in length. It has a single-hole nakago with a two-character mei that appears to be signed "Katsumitsu." The blade exhibits itame hada, midare-yahazu hamon, chu kissaki, and ihori mune.

The name "Katsumitsu" belonged to a family of swordsmiths from the Bizen (Osafune) school during the late Muromachi Period (1392-1594). It is believed that nine Katsumitsu swordsmiths were active during this era. The most renowned among them was known to sign his blades as Bishu Osafune Katsumitsu.

This exquisite pair of Japanese swords presents an excellent opportunity for collectors to acquire historical pieces from the late Muromachi Period. With its impressive attributes and unique history tied to the renowned Katsumitsu swordsmiths, these swords are sure to pique the interest of sword enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The auction for this pair of Japanese swords with matching koshirae is set to end on March 1, 2024. With a current bid of $1,100, the excitement and competition among bidders are steadily increasing.
