Current Bid: $20,000 on Christie's for Eyewitness Account of Mutiny on the Bounty

An extraordinary piece of history is up for auction at Christie's. The item in question is a two-volume bound manuscript, believed to be written between 1813 and 1818, detailing the infamous mutiny on the Bounty. This firsthand account was recorded by Peter Heywood, a midshipman who was just sixteen years old at the time and one of the mutineers.

The manuscript comprises a series of correspondence within the Heywood family. It includes letters between Peter Heywood and his mother Elizabeth, his sister Nessy, his uncles Sir Thomas Pasley, Colonel Howell, James Modyford Heywood, and others. These letters shed light on various aspects of Heywood's involvement in the mutiny, such as his reasons for remaining aboard ship and his capture, trial, death sentence, which was eventually commuted.

This incredible historical document also provides an intriguing insight into Heywood's last day in Tahiti before his arrest and his subsequent captivity aboard the Pandora. The manuscript even recounts the Pandora's shipwreck on the Great Barrier Reef.

Considering that the originals of most of this correspondence are believed to be lost, this compilation holds immense historical value. It offers a unique perspective from one who experienced such a significant event firsthand.

As it stands now, the highest bid is $20,000. However, given the rarity and significance of this eyewitness account, it is expected to attract more attention soon. Interested buyers have until February 2nd, 2024 to place their bids on Christie's.

This remarkable find offers an opportunity for collectors and history enthusiasts alike to own a tangible piece of maritime history. As more bids come in during these final days of the auction, we eagerly await what price this exceptional item will ultimately fetch.
